What is Indo Stories ?

The Indo people (Dutch: Indische Nederlanders, Indonesian: Orang Indo) are Eurasian individuals with connections to Indonesia. In its narrowest sense, the term refers to people in the former Dutch East Indies who held European legal status but were of mixed Dutch or other European and indigenous Indonesian descent, as well as their modern-day descendants.

In a broader sense, an Indo is anyone of mixed European and Indonesian descent. Indos are closely associated with the colonial culture of the former Dutch East Indies, a Dutch colony in Southeast Asia that preceded modern Indonesia after its proclamation of independence on August 17, 1945.

Historically, the term described people acknowledged as being of mixed Dutch or other European and Indonesian descent, or Europeans in the Dutch East Indies who had partial Asian ancestry. While their European ancestry was predominantly Dutch, it also included Portuguese, German, British, French, Belgian, and others.

The term “Indo” was first recorded in 1898 as an abbreviation of the Dutch term Indo-European. Other terms used over time include ‘Dutch Indonesians,’ ‘Eurasians,’ ‘Indo-Europeans,’ ‘Indo-Dutch,’ and ‘Dutch-Indos.’ In contemporary Indonesia, the term "Indo" is also widely used as an abbreviation for Indonesia.
